What It’s Like Living in Kaneohe

What it’s like living in Kaneohe: A neighborhood guide by a military friendly realtor Daniel Lee Kim.

Aloha, finding your next home is not an easy task so let me guide you as you embark on this new chapter of your life.  Kaneohe is the perfect balance between natural beauty, cultural experiences, and family friendly amenities.  I’m Daniel Lee Kim, former U.S. Marine Officer turned real estate agent, and I’m here to guide you through the unique lifestyle Kaneohe has to offer.  Let’s dive into it!

Location:

Kaneohe is located on the Windward side of the island, and it is surrounded by the magnificent Ko’olau mountains and Kaneohe Bay.  Location is ideal for military families as the H-3 Highway provides easy access to Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam, and Honolulu International Airport.  Not to mention, the short drives through Likelike and Pali Highway conveniently placing you in the heart of Waikiki, Ala Moana, and Kaka’ako.

Charm of Kaneohe:

Kaneohe used to be mecca of finishing ponds, and you can still see the remanence of it to this day.  Nowadays Kaneohe is known as a quiet town providing tranquil lifestyle where you have all the amenities ranging from convenient grocery stores to a mall, various restaurants, gyms, hikes, botanical gardens, to Kaneohe Sandbar. Whether you enjoy mountainous activities or water activities Kaneohe has everything you need.

Water Activities and the Kaneohe Sandbar

When living in Kaneohe, you’ll have the luxury of the breathtaking Kaneohe Bay in your backyard. Not just a pretty sight, the bay is your gateway to a myriad of water activities. Canoeing, kayaking, paddle boarding, and fishing are local favorites.

And then there’s the Kaneohe Sandbar – a slice of paradise.  This natural wonder is the perfect spot for a day of relaxation. The aqua blue waters and the stunning Ko’olau Mountain range in the backdrop make it a picture-perfect location.

He’eia Kea Boat Harbor is one stop shop for all water activities in Kaneohe Bay.  They provide fishing charters, scenic cruises, snorkel and scuba diving excursions and many more.  It is also a public boat ramp so you can easily launch your boat from He’eia Boat Harbor and get to Kaneohe Sandbar.

Embracing the Outdoors

If you’re someone who finds solace in nature, Kaneohe will not disappoint you. The neighborhood boasts a variety of hiking trails suitable for all ages. From family-friendly hikes to more challenging terrains, there’s a trail for everyone.

My personal favorite is the Ho’omaluhia Botanical Gardens a tranquil spot to uncover native flora, relish the lagoon’s serenity, or bask in panoramic mountain valley views.  Or if you are in the mood more a bit more challenge then I recommend the Pu’u Ma’eli’eli Trail in the Valley of the Temples.  This trail takes you to a pillbox with a magnificent view of the Kaneohe Bay.

For the golf enthusiasts, the Ko’olau Golf Club and Bayview Golf Course offer impeccable views and challenges.

Local Eateries and Shopping

Kaneohe promises culinary adventures, be it traditional Hawaiian delectable or global flavors. Recommendations include Fresh Catch for pristine poke, the unique Hawaiian-Asian-Italian fusion dishes at Adela’s Country Eatery, and the unbeatable prime steak at the scenically-located Haleiwa Joe’s Haiku.

Kaneohe also has a shopping mall providing you with a diverse option of boutique local shops to major franchise brands.  Target recently opened their Kaneohe location next to the mall providing an additional comfort level for Kaneohe and neighboring residents.
